The USFWS is not seeking applications.
The USFWS plans to award this grant agreement under the Department Manual 505-2, using 2. 14B(1) to justify a single source award to the National Wildlife Federation (NWF).
2. 14B(1) Unsolicited Proposal the proposed award is the result
of an unsolicited assistance application which represents a unique or innovative idea, method, or approach which is not the subject of a current or planned contract or assistance award but which is deemed advantageous to the program objectives.
The NWF proposes to work with Natural Learning Initiative and the USFWS to develop a pilot project to establish a Nature Play Corps within the 21st Century Youth Conservation Corps.
The cooperating organizations will plan and organize a 3-week internship experience for fifteen youth ages 18 to 25 at Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge Complex, provide nature play-based programming for the Refuges visitors, and develop recommendations for expanding the project within the USFWS and other Department of the Interior agencies.
The project intends to restore a direct relationship with nature by engaging youth as play leaders who work with adult mentors to design, construct, manage and provide programming at natural play areas at parks, wildlife refuges and other public lands.
NWFs efforts are in alignment with the Youth in Natural Resource Careers initiative need for programs that encourage and develop young people with the appropriate skill sets and interests to become conservation professionals.
