Metagenomic Analyses of the Oral Microbiome (R01)

-Purpose.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) issued by the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), National Institutes of Health (NIH), solicits proposals to develop new insight into the role of microbes in human oral health and disease through research on the

total oral microbial community (microbiota) using metagenomic approaches built upon recent developments in DNA sequencing, gene assembly, and bioinformatics.

The ultimate goal is to completely characterize all microbes and their genes (microbiome) in the oral environment.

To this end, we are soliciting projects that will analyze the genomes of both cultivatable and uncultivable bacteria, archaea, viruses, fungi, and parasites.

Applicants will be expected to work with state-of-the-science genomic sequencing centers and bioinformatics groups to sequence and annotate all microbes in the oral cavity under conditions of health and disease.

-Mechanism of Support.

This FOA will utilize the NIH Research Project Grant (R01) award mechanism.

-Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards.

Awards issued under this FOA are contingent upon the availability of funds and the submission of a sufficient number of meritorious applications.
