Established in 1862, the Department of Agriculture serves all Americans through anti-hunger efforts, stewardship of nearly 200 million acres of national forest and rangelands, and through product safety and conservation efforts. The USDA opens markets for American farmers and ranchers and provides food for needy people around the world.
Program Accomplishments
Estimates on approximately 120 crops and 45 livestock items are included in approximately 400 reports. These reports include crops, livestock and poultry estimates; agricultural chemical usage; prices received by farmers; prices paid for commodities and services; and data on farm employment and wage rates. The Census of Agriculture is conducted every 5 years, for the years ending in a "2" or "7" and provides comprehensive data down to the county level on all aspects of the agricultural economy.
Uses and Use Restrictions
Copies of publications of estimates and reports of production, supply, price and other aspects of the agricultural economy are available to anyone without restriction.
Publications are provided free to survey respondents, press, Congress, and, many current publications and all data products are also available for free on the NASS Internet World Wide Website: http://www.usda.gov/nass/.
Other publications are available to all others on a subscription basis.
