Faculty Loan Repayment Programs

As funded under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA), the Faculty Loan Repayment Program (FLRP) provides a financial incentive for degree-trained health professionals from disadvantaged backgrounds to pursue academic careers in allopathic medicine, nursing (RN only), osteopathic
medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, podiatric medicine, optometry, veterinary medicine, public health, allied health or graduate programs in behavioral and mental health practice for a minimum of 2 years.

Fiscal Year 2008: $5,548 to $63,400; $36,281 (average award for FY06 including funds for award tax liability); $17,530 to $55,600; $49,767.49 (average award for FY07 including funds for award tax liability); and $49,297.43 (average award for FY08 including funds for award tax liability). Uses and Use Restrictions

Direct Payments for Specified Use.

Funds will be used to repay eligible health professions educational loans incurred by the applicant in return for serving a minimum of 2 years as a full-time or part-time faculty member at one of the following accredited health profession college or university: allopathic medicine, nursing, osteopathic medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, podiatric medicine, optometry, veterinary medicine, public health, or a school that offers a graduate program in behavioral or mental health, and certain allied health programs.

The Faculty Loan Repayment Program will pay up to $20,000 a year in return for a two year service commitment obligation, based on the participant s outstanding balance of eligible educational loans (the maximum amount is $40,000 for 2 years).

Recipients of a FLRP award will receive a contract signed by Secretary of HHS or his/her designee.
