The overarching goal of this agreement is to foster youth engagement in heritage preservation.
Project work is intended to forge connections to the Keweenaw’s nationally significant historical sites and stories while providing opportunities for collaborative inter-generational interaction
between youth workers, Heritage Site managers, and NPS cultural resource staff.
The primary goal of the park’s youth work program is to develop a generation of engaged citizens that understand and advocate for Keweenaw National Historical Park and the NPS.
Through heritage place-based work projects and educational experiences, youth can develop a better understanding and appreciation for local historic resources and issues that lead to community engagement, civic participation, and increased interest in the NPS.
This project specifically targets underserved youth living in and adjacent to Keweenaw National Historical Park.
Youth enrollees will be engaged through outreach work projects that, at the end of each week, will be capped by an educational experience exploring aspects of Keweenaw history and related environmental issues.
Throughout the eight week season, students will work with the park’s web coordinator to develop content for Facebook posts, and other relevant social media, integrating photographs and personal impressions of the park in an effort to inform and educate the public about the value and purpose of historic preservation.
