by promoting mutual understanding and enhancing relations between the United States and the participating European and Eurasian countries, which include the nations of Central and Eastern Europe, the Balkans, the Baltics, the Caucasus countries, the nations of Central Asia, and Mongolia.

The FLEX program allows high school students to live in American society for an academic year and acquire leadership skills while attending a U. S. high school.

The students live with host families, participate in activities to learn about American society and values, and, in turn, expose host communities across the United States to their own cultures and traditions.

To date, more than 32,000 students have participated in the FLEX program.
