FY24 Short Line Safety Institute - Safety Train Systems

Under the Project, SLSI will acquire, modify, and renovate rail cars and other equipment to create the SLSI Safety Train Systems (STS) in order to bolster hazardous materials emergency response through hands-on experience with real and functional training props, such as water and compressed air, and

simulated release scenarios with no actual use or release of hazmat during training for first responders and short line and regional railroad employees.

SLSI recognizes the need to educate and train employees involved with the handling and transportation by rail of hazardous materials to reduce human-factor incidents.

Likewise, training emergency personnel enables them to respond to hazardous materials incidents on and near railroads in a way that ensures their safety and the safety of the community.
