BILATERAL ACADEMIC RESEARCH INITIATIVE (BARI) SOCIAL SCIENCE PROGRAM

This NFO is for the Bilateral Academic Research Initiative Pilot Program (BARI), which is jointly sponsored by the US Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) and the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) as part of United Kingdom Research and Innovation (UKRI).

The BARI program addresses


high risk basic research as an international collaboration.

This research should attempt to understand new phenomena or produce discoveries that would impact understanding societal resilience in relation to social influence and information campaigns.

The goal of the program is to produce significant scientific breakthroughs with far reaching consequences in understanding and influencing behavior below the threshold of armed conflict, specifically in relation to countering influence that leads to socio-economic and political instability.

Proposals focused on specific devices or components are beyond the scope of this NFO.

Additional Information of Eligibility:
As a result of this BARI competition, a program of international collaboration between the United States and the United Kingdom will be created.

Consequently, the proposal will include two research teams, one of which will be from the U. S. and the other from the U.K.

Accordingly, the BARI competition is open only to teams comprised of at least one (1) US institution of Higher Education as defined in 34 CFR 600.4 with a degree granting program in science or engineering (US University) and at least one (1) UK research institution (UK research organization).

Proposals may only be submitted by UK research organizations who are eligible to apply to UKRI.
