This announcement solicits applications for the Area Health Education Centers Program.
Program Purpose The purpose of the AHEC Program is to develop and enhance education and training networks within communities, academic institutions, and community-based organizations.

Additional Information of Eligibility:Entities eligible to apply are public or nonprofit private accredited schools of allopathic medicine and osteopathic medicine and incorporated consortia made up of such schools or the parent institutions of such schools. In states and territories in which no AHEC Program is in operation, an accredited school of nursing is an eligible applicant.
AHEC Requirements in Sections 751(d)(2)(A) and 751(d)(2)(B) of the PHS Act For Fiscal Year 2016, the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2016 (Public Law 114-113) gives the Secretary authority to grant a waiver of the AHEC requirements under sections 751(d)(2)(A) and 751(d)(2)(B) of the PH S Act[i] to programs meeting certain requirements.
Applicants seeking a waiver must submit their request with their grant application.
Decisions regarding the waiver requests are contingent upon extension of the Secretary’s waiver authority for Fiscal Year 2017 and HRSA administrative review of each waiver request. For instructions, please see Section 2.

[1] § 751(d)(2)(A) of the Public Health Service Act (PHS Act) requires that each Area Health Education Center “is a public or private organization whose structure, governance, and operation is independent from the awardee and the parent institution of the awardee.” PHS Act sec.
751(d)(2)(B) requires that each Area Health Education Center “is not a school of medicine or osteopathic medicine, the parent institution of such a school, or a branch campus or other subunit of a school of medicine or osteopathic medicine or its parent institution, or a consortium of such entities.”
