Research to Address Systemic and Structural Barriers and Facilitators to Improve the HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) Care Continuum for People Who Use Substances (R01 Clinical Trials Required)

Pre-exposure prophylaxis, also known as PrEP, is a safe, highly effective medication for preventing transmission of HIV from sex or injection drug use.

Despite PrEPs high efficacy and its availability for over a decade, the awareness, uptake, and adherence of PrEP, especially among people who

use substances remain suboptimal.

The goal of this concept is to support research to examine and address systemic and structural factors that impede or facilitate the PrEP awareness, uptake, and adherence, among people who use substances.

Projects will develop, implement, and evaluate effective strategies that meet the needs of people who use substances to improve the PrEP care continuum.
