Reducing Unnecessary and Prolonged Pretrial Detention

The Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs of the U. S. Department of State announces an open competition for organizations to submit applications to carry out a project to reduce unnecessary and prolonged pretrial detention (the detention of an accused person before the trial

has taken place) in partner countries.

The envisioned project will create or expand access to one or multiple interventions that will reduce the overuse and misuse of pretrial detention in partner countries.

A second aspect of this project will be to test the effectiveness of the interventions to reduce unnecessary and prolonged pretrial detention, with a goal of improving the publicly available evidence base for such interventions and identifying practices that can be replicated by technical assistance providers in a wider variety of foreign countries with different legal frameworks and social, political, and cultural contexts.
